Course Description:
Dentifrice developments have resulted in the use of many ingredients and numerous claims, making it important to be able to differentiate dentifrices based on indications, ingredients, efficacy and facts. This presentation examines their ingredients, mechanisms of action, efficacy and evidence for their use is provided. Recent developments that include the use of natural ingredients and new technologies, are discussed in the same context. Considerations pertaining to their use that are relevant for individual patient care will also be addressed.
- List and describe active ingredients, their indications, safety and efficacy
- Review and inactive ingredients and their functions in dentifrices
- Identify potential contraindications for individual patients
- Describe new technologies incorporated into dentifrices, including available evidence for their use

Dr. Collins is a member of the American Dental Association, ADA Standards working groups, American Association of Dental Research, Chicago Dental Society, and OSAP. She is the ADA representative to AAMI, and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. During her career, Fiona has lived and worked in five countries, and has held positions in clinical practice, education and industry. Dr. Collins graduated as a general dentist from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and holds an MBA and an MA from Boston University in the United States.
